FAQs on Face Slimming and Botox Jaw Reduction - Achieving a V shape face!
Question 1: Why do I have a square and boxy facial profile? I want to have a slim V shaped face, is there any aesthetics procedure that can help me?
Tiffiny Yang: Desiring to slim your face and have a V shaped face? If you have a face shape that looks too big at the jaws, it is possible that you have big masseter muscles that is causing your face to look rounder, bigger or too square. You can slim the jawline with a simple injection of Botox (or other neuromodulators) on each side of the jaw. This is face slimming procedure is popularly known as Botox jaws.
The masseters are two bulky muscles on each side of the angle of your jaw. They serve as muscles of mastication, which means they help you chew. There are two other muscle groups that also perform this function, namely the temporalis muscles and the pterygoid muscles.
Sometimes, big jaws are caused by habitual or subconscious grinding of teeth. With excessive chewing or grinding (in a condition known as bruxism), the masseters at the jawline can grow to quite a size (causing the jaws to look square), much like how body builders grow their abs and pects by training them. Relaxing the muscles by injecting Botox is effective in shrinking the jawline, thereby reducing the unsightly square jaw appearance.
See below the difference between huge masseters at the jawline, and what happens after Botox has been injected to reduce them. Remember, its minimally invasive, no open surgery is required.
Question 2: Is Botox jaw reduction procedure an open, full blown surgery? I want to have a slim V shape face, but I do not want a full blown surgery, is there any non-invasive medical aesthetics procedure that can help me?
Tiffiny Yang: It is a myth that to achieve a V shape slim face with the reduction of square jaws, invasive surgery (such as cutting the jaw bone) is necessary. The reality is that there are safe and effective non-surgical / non-invasive methods to achieve square jaw reduction & face slimming.
So, how is this done? Neuromodulators (such as Botox / Dysport / Xeomin) is injected into the masseters on each side of the face and spread out at multiple points within the muscle to produce jaw reduction and face slimming results. With This can be completed in under 5 minutes.
It is highly effective, with minimal or no pain and absolutely no downtime at all. This Botox jaw reduction procedure is essentially a non surgical procedure.
My personal experience with the non surgical jaw reduction / face slimming treatment has been that almost all our patients see a noticeable reduction in their square jaw after 2 to 8 weeks.
Question 3: Will I get a V shape face after the square jaw reduction face slimming treatment? How do I get a V shape face?
Tiffiny Yang: It depends. As the name of the treatment suggests, it only reduces square jaws and slims the face. After the reduction of your square jaw and with a slimmed face, you can also consider other non-invasive treatments that help with face slimming such as chin filler augmentation to contour your face and make it the desired V shape - also known as an almond face / oval face or “瓜子脸” in Chinese. The almond shaped face is the ideal face shape that most East Asian females are looking for. Chin filler is is a non-invasive, non-surgical procedure.
Indeed, a short or stubby chin is the nemesis of the ideal face shape for beauty. Using hyaluronic acid filler injections, you can reshape your chin (lengthening it or changing the shape of your chin), and therefore improving both your side and frontal profile.
The chin filler augmentation treatment synergistically combines the effect of the botox square jaw reduction / face slimming treatment which gives a far better result than each single procedure alone.
Generally, for a first-time chin filler treatment, an average of 2cc of filler is sufficient. Pain is minimized with the use of filler that contains lignocaine (a numbing agent) to numb the injected areas.
In case you are wondering, hyaluronic acid filler is a proteoglycan similar to what is also found in our skin, eyes and joints. It is highly reversible, either by dissolution or natural breakdown by the body over months, and has been found to be very safe for facial contouring.
Other effective and important treatments for slimming the face include Botox skin tightening, Face threadlift and Thermage skin tightening.
Question 4: What are the side effects and downtime for both the Botox jaw reduction treatment and the chin filler?
Tiffiny Yang: From my experience with jaw reduction / face slimming with botox, you will almost always walk out with no swelling or bruising, perhaps with the occasional needle mark. In the first week, there may be a slight dull ache over the muscles, especially with chewing. This should be transient and resolve within a week. You should abstain from massaging the muscles and from lying down for 4 hours after the procedure. This technique has a great advantage in reducing risks to almost negligible, since it is only 1 skin injection point within a good safety margin.
Question 5: Will my skin sag after I undergo non-surgical jaw reduction by Botox?
Tiffiny Yang: Absolutely not! Although the difference in jaw slimming is clearly visible and noticeable, it is not so great as to cause excess skin in most people such that sagging occurs, unless significant laxity is already present before the treatment. This procedure is known to produce a natural looking effect-- unlike an open surgical jaw reduction where your friends will most likely be able to tell that something weird is going on with you.
After the non-invasive jaw reduction face slimming with Botox, those who know you may think that you lost some weight. That is the beauty of non-invasive aesthetics procedure, it visibly enhances without being painfully obvious.
Question 6: When I do non-surgical jaw reduction with botox, will I become addicted to the procedure?
Tiffiny Yang: Only if you’re addicted to looking better than before. The procedure itself does not produce any form of dependence or tolerance to it. If you are satisfied with the results or decide not to continue with it, you do not have to repeat the procedure any more than you so wish.
Question 7: Is the effect of non-surgical jaw reduction with botox permanent after a while or after a few times of treatment?
Tiffiny Yang: This is a question that is still under major medical debate. Some believe that after multiple treatments, prolonged weakening and atrophy of the masseter muscles at the jaw makes it difficult for excessive jaw muscles to build up again, so the effect of jaw reduction / face slimming becomes progressively more permanent each time you repeat the treatment.
Some medical experts also argue that there may even be some bone remodeling effect of the jaw due to changes in muscle structure and action on the angles of the jaw. In simple terms, it means that the jaw bone changes shape changes progressively and permanently.
So, what do I believe? I am a practical girl, and would advice anyone who want to keep his or her V shape face to look at the mirror instead of medical literature. If the jaw and boxy look starts to come back, go for a repeat botox jaw reduction face slimming treatment. After repeated treatments, the square jaws don't come back, then it is likely long lasting now. Otherwise, I think it is a good idea to maintain it with sufficient doses at regular intervals, depending on the prescribed dose). Like everything else in life, looking fabulous requires perseverence and diligence.
Question 8: I did the non-surgical jaw reduction with botox. Why do I not see the result?
Tiffiny Yang: If you do not see the results from your recent non-surgical jaw reduction by Botox, here’s a checklist to find out why:-
Was it a reliable treatment? This may seem rather common sense, but it is important to know that your treating personnel is licensed and trained to perform this procedure, as well as use approved brands of botulinum toxin. At the date of this article, 3 brands of botulinum toxin: Botox, Xeomin and Dysport are FDA (USA) and HSA (Singapore) approved. No spa or beautician should be doing this procedure for you.
Has it been 2 months since you underwent a non-surgical jaw reduction with Botox? Results are not instantaneous. It takes an average of 2-8 weeks to see good results.
Was the dose of botulinum toxin (Botox, Xeomin or Dyspot) enough? Low doses effect small changes, such that you may not be unable to tell the difference. Perhaps you need to check how much botulinum toxin was used and whether you need a top up.
Is the diagnosis and reason for treatment correct? There are 4 reasons to not having a slim face: big bone, fat in the buccal areas, loose skin that dropped and masseter muscles at the angles of the jaws. Non-surgical jaw reduction with Botox, Dysport or Xeomin only resolves the last one - namely, the removal of the masseter muscles at the angles of the jaws. You need other procedures to treat the other 3 causes. Occasionally, square and boxy jaws are caused by more than one reason.
Do you have antibodies to the botulinum toxin? This is very rare but possible. If you have antibodies to the botulinum toxin, the injected Botox, Xeomin or Dyspot will have been removed by the body and rendered ineffective at the point of injection. In that case, you will have to consider other forms of treatments.
